Antietam Battlefield Historic Basemap
Visualize yourself in the circa-1862 landscape of the Antietam battlefield! This map recreates the 1862 topography of the Antietam battlefield in three dimensions. Traverse the battlefield with this map to orient yourself with the historic landscape while studying America's bloodiest day.
Historical maps such as the Carman-Cope maps were digitized and given accurate geographic reference, and historical and modern aerial imagery as well as laser scans of the earth were utilized to determine the placement of historic features such as roads, fences, buildings, field cover types, woodlots, water features, and outcrops with a high level of precision. Corrections were made to the topographical data itself to erase post-battle features. Direction was provided from the battle’s foremost experts on the placement of features.
This map is a publication of the Antietam Institute. Founded in 2021, the Antietam Institute is a member-based educational and philanthropic 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to study, collect, publish and teach about the Battle of Antietam and the Maryland Campaign of 1862.
