The trail is located west of Goblin Valley near Hanksville, UT. The distance to the trailhead from Moab is approximately 100 miles. The suggested route proceeds north from Moab on US 191 to westbound I-70, then south on US 24 to Goblin Valley. From Goblin Valley, continue west on Temple Mountain Road, then south on Behind the Reef Road to Little Wild Horse Canyon Wash (BLM 858), where the route begins. The route enters Little Wild Horse Canyon Wash, which includes narrow sections. Large pickups are not recommended due to the narrow passages. Scenery The trail explores the San Rafael Reef geologic feature west of Goblin Valley State Park. The Reef extends approximately 75 miles and consists of steeply tilted layers of Wingate and Navajo Sandstone, eroded into fins, cliffs, domes, and canyons. Views include Factory Butte to the west and the Henry Mountains to the south. The route passes remnants of the Factory Butte mine, Bell Canyon Hiking Trail, and Little Wild Horse Slot Canyon. Surface The trail consists primarily of hard-packed dirt, sandy canyon wash bottoms, a narrow squeeze, and one tricky ledge on entry and exit.
