Description
The Buckskin OHV Loop is a scenic gem located high in the Santa Rosa Mountains of northeastern Humboldt County. This moderate 32-mile loop offers breathtaking vistas, outstanding wildlife viewing, and the peaceful remoteness that makes this area special.
Riders frequently see antelope, mule deer, bighorn sheep, elk, and many native birds. During spring and early summer, the mountains burst with colorful wildflowers. The trail connects with other Forest Service roads and runs alongside the Santa Rosa-Paradise Peak Wilderness Area.
Other Information
The trails follow US Forest Service roads and are open to high-clearance 4WD vehicles and all trail users year-round. Expect sections with loose surface material, steep terrain, and occasional deep ruts, so ride with caution. Cell service is very limited or nonexistent in the area, and emergency services can be 1–2 hours away.
Some trails receive minimal maintenance and can be faint or hard to follow at times — contact the local Forest Service office for the latest conditions.
Camping Options
Lye Creek Campground (fee required) sits in a lovely aspen grove along Lye Creek, just south of the loop. Additional dispersed camping and staging areas are available along Hinkey Summit Road.
This high-mountain loop is perfect for riders seeking beautiful scenery, wildlife encounters, and a genuine backcountry experience in northern Nevada.
Helpful Tip
Come prepared — this is remote country with limited services. Bring plenty of water, fuel, repair tools, and weather-appropriate gear.
