Description
The Buffalo Hills in northwestern Washoe County offer a true high-desert escape just west of the Black Rock Desert. This rugged range features rocky slopes dotted with juniper that open up into expansive sagebrush plains — prime habitat for mule deer and other wildlife.
The OHV trail system includes everything from smooth, fast sections to more challenging technical routes with stretches of exposed rock. Riders can enjoy sweeping scenic vistas and easy connections to the Black Rock Desert and Squaw Creek Reservoir area. Hunting, horseback riding, and hiking are also popular here.
Other Information
Motor vehicles are permitted on designated routes only. Several Wilderness Study Areas border the trail network, so motorized and mechanized use is prohibited inside those wilderness boundaries. Horses are allowed in the wilderness areas with certified weed-free hay only.
Multiple ranches and active grazing operations exist in the area — please respect private property and always leave gates as you found them.
Camping is available at Squaw Creek Reservoir (on private land — follow all rules) and dispersed camping is allowed throughout most BLM land. All routes in the valley are within 40 miles of Gerlach, which provides gas, restaurants, and basic amenities.
This remote high-desert range is perfect for riders seeking solitude, dramatic scenery, and authentic Nevada backcountry adventure.
Helpful Tip
This is very remote country with limited cell service. Come prepared with extra fuel, water, food, repair tools, and recovery gear.
