Flat Iron Mesa - Rated 6

Flat Iron Mesa - Rated 6

This route explores the Navajo Sandstone slickrock formations known as “Fins” and the eroded remnants called “Things,” located northeast of Moab. The fins originated as wind-blown sand dunes approximately 200 million years ago, which cemented into sandstone and are now eroding back into sand. Access is via Sand Flats Road, covering rolling terrain east of Hell’s Revenge, between Negro Bill Canyon and the North Fork of Mill Creek Canyon. The trail includes several sudden, steep slickrock climbs and descents that challenge vehicles with long overhangs. Standard tire tread performs adequately on slickrock, though taller tires aid clearance and aggressive tread improves traction in sand. Scenery Offers exceptional near and distant views. The Navajo sandstone fins and mounds are visually striking, enhanced by the deep Negro Bill Canyon system. To the east, red mesa rims rise at the base of the snow-capped La Sal Mountains. Surface Primarily slickrock and very sandy dirt. Some climbs are complicated by loose sand approaches. Trail Details The route resembles an all-day roller coaster with repeated ascents and descents. Notable features include “Frenchies Fin” and Kenny’s Climb, among the steepest sections typically attempted on this trail. Length: 25 total, 13 off highway Min Tire Size: 33+ inches Winch: No, Front Locker: No, Rear Locker: No
