Description
Fort Sage Off-Highway Vehicle Area is a fantastic high-desert riding destination located near the town of Doyle in northeastern California, roughly 45 miles north of Reno, Nevada.
Spanning approximately 28,598 acres of public land, this BLM Special Recreation Management Area is specifically managed for off-highway vehicles. It welcomes motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, and 4WD rigs with a well-developed trail network covering over 140 miles.
Riders will find a nice mix of terrain — wide-open sandy flats dotted with sagebrush, as well as rocky, steep canyons and gulches that add challenge and excitement. Trails are clearly marked with numbered signs indicating difficulty ratings and the types of vehicles recommended for each route.
Convenient developed staging areas with graveled access roads are accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles and green/red sticker legal OHVs. Per county ordinance, riders can also legally use CR 327 (Fort Sage Road) and CR 344 (Summers Road).
Other Information
Motor vehicles are permitted on designated trails and roads only. Operation and maintenance of the area are supported in part by the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division. In October 2018, the BLM completed construction of the new Diamondback and Raptor Trailheads near the main Fort Sage entrance.
This accessible and diverse OHV area offers excellent riding for all skill levels in a classic high-desert setting.
