To the northeast lies the rugged Lava Beds mountain range, surrounded by OHV-friendly roads. On the northeast edge of the network you’ll find the ghost town of Sulphur, where a few ruins remain along with informational kiosks and markers. A lone historic cabin still stands in the center of the site with plenty of parking on the wide dirt roads.
Gerlach serves as the closest town for food and fuel, with a small market located 7 miles south of town on State Route 447 near Empire. Farther south along the same highway, Nixon and Fernley offer more services and amenities.
Don’t miss the popular Trego Hot Springs, located roughly midway between Sulphur and Gerlach.
Other Information
• Motor vehicles permitted on designated routes only.
• Dispersed camping is allowed throughout most of the area (unless posted). Developed camping is available at Porter Springs Campground and Rye Patch State Recreation Area.
• Some sections near springs and railways are private land — respect all signage and property boundaries.
• Active grazing occurs in the area — close any gates you open on public land.
A remote and scenic desert playground packed with hot springs, history, and endless trails.
