Located at the southern end of the Pancake Mountain Range in Nye County, the Lunar Crater OHV Trails take you into one of Nevada’s most unique and otherworldly landscapes. This volcanic wonderland features dramatic maars, cinder cones, basalt flows, and craters that closely resemble the surface of the moon.
Traveling the bumpy, unpaved byway, you’ll first encounter Easy Chair Crater. Continuing deeper into the area, striking rock formations lead to the impressive Lunar Crater itself. From the rim of Lunar Crater, you can view nearly 20 other extinct volcanoes scattered across the surrounding terrain.
In addition to the fascinating geology, the area comes alive with seasonal wildflowers and supports a variety of high-desert wildlife. The mix of volcanic features and open desert scenery creates a truly unforgettable experience for OHV explorers.
Other Information
Motor vehicles are permitted on existing roads and trails only. Feel free to park your vehicle and walk to the edges of the craters for the best views — just be sure to stay on designated routes and respect all closures.
This remote volcanic field lies near the Quinn Canyon Wilderness and is surrounded by Wilderness Study Areas including Palisade Mesa and The Wall. Please respect wilderness boundaries — motorized and mechanized use is not allowed inside designated wilderness.
The Lunar Crater area offers a rare opportunity to explore moon-like terrain and volcanic geology right here in Nevada. Whether you’re chasing unique photo opportunities, enjoying the solitude of the high desert, or simply looking for an adventure unlike anywhere else, this trail system delivers an experience you won’t find in many other places.
Helpful Tip
Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and recovery gear — the terrain can be rough and services are very limited in this remote area.
