Description
The Pine Grove Hills OHV Trails offer a spectacular mix of scenic beauty and historic exploration in a remote high-desert mountain setting. Extending from the Wilson Canyon OHV Area in the north to the Bighorn Campground on the East Walker River in the south, this network provides excellent riding south of Smith, NV off State Route 338.
Trails are mostly easy dirt roads and sand washes, making them accessible for many riders. In the higher elevations and canyons you’ll encounter more technical rocky sections and hill climbs. Most roads are wide enough for high-clearance 4WD passenger vehicles.
One of the best routes is the 23-mile Sand Canyon Adventure Loop. Starting from dispersed camping areas, this loop winds through diverse terrain — canyons, ridgelines, and summits — while delivering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Popular side trips include visits to the historic ghost town of Pine Grove and the Cowboy and Rockland mine sites.
Other Information
Motor vehicles are permitted on designated trails only. Several dispersed campsites are available throughout the area (no water or facilities). Vault restrooms can be found at The Elbow Recreation Area and Fletcher Springs Picnic Site.
The Sand Canyon dispersed camping areas are popular with both OHV riders and equestrians — please be respectful and share the area courteously. This is very remote backcountry, so always plan ahead: carry warm clothing, first aid supplies, plenty of food and water, and tools to handle vehicle issues.
For local regulations regarding OHV use on county roads, check with land managers or local authorities. Practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out everything you bring in.
A fantastic destination for riders who enjoy scenic mountain trails combined with Nevada’s fascinating mining history.
