The Ranger Trail provides a rewarding point-to-point ride through the Schell Creek Range east of Ely. This 41.8-mile natural surface trail runs from Berry Creek in the south to Ranger Road near the old ghost town of Schellbourne, a former Pony Express station.
Riders enjoy varied terrain and frequent panoramic views, especially the expansive vistas looking west over Steptoe Valley. Several Forest Service campgrounds make it easy to break up the journey, with options at Berry Creek, Timber Creek, Bird Creek, and East Creek.
Other Information
The trail welcomes horseback riding, motorcycles, and OHVs 50 inches wide or less. Because significant portions of the Schell Creek Range are designated wilderness, motorized and mechanized travel is prohibited inside the High Schells and Becky Peak Wilderness boundaries. Please respect these boundaries and remain on designated trails for your activity. Horses are allowed with certified weed-free hay only.
This trail stands out for those wanting a peaceful, immersive ride with beautiful mountain scenery and a real sense of remoteness in eastern Nevada.
Helpful Tip
This is remote high-country terrain — carry plenty of water, food, repair tools, and weather-appropriate gear.
