Description
Sand Mountain Recreation Area is a popular 4,795-acre BLM OHV fee site located between Fallon and Middlegate. At its heart stands Nevada’s largest sand dune — a massive, ever-shifting hill approximately 3 miles long, 1 mile wide, and rising nearly 600 feet. This impressive dune creates a dynamic playground perfect for off-roaders of all experience levels.
Open OHV riding is allowed across all un-vegetated sand areas, while travel through vegetated zones is limited to existing roads and trails only. The area offers plenty of space for dispersed camping and draws between 50,000 and 70,000 visitors annually.
Just beyond the dunes lies the historic Sand Springs Pony Express Station, one of the original 150 stations built in 1860. Adjacent to the recreation area is the Sand Springs Desert Study Area, which protects unique Kearney Buckwheat habitat and the rare Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly.
For those wanting longer rides, trails extend north and east from the dunes into the scenic Stillwater Mountain Range.
Other Information
Road resurfacing and recreation area improvements are scheduled to begin March 17th — see the current BLM press release for updates.
Motor vehicles are permitted on designated routes only. Fees are required for entry into the recreation area.
This unique desert dune site combines thrilling sand riding, rich history, and beautiful high-desert scenery, making it a favorite stop for both locals and travelers along the Loneliest Road.
Helpful Tip
Bring recovery gear — the sand can be soft and deep in places. Fees apply, and the area can get very busy on weekends.
