Steel Bender - Rated 6
This variable-difficulty route lies between Moab and the La Sal Mountains along Mill Creek, a major drainage. It crosses the creek several times through scenic sections of Mill Creek Canyon, overlooks the North Fork while climbing toward South Mesa at the base of the La Sals.
Scenery
Travels two distinct, beautiful stretches of Mill Creek Canyon. Higher sections provide elevated views (around 6,000 ft) over classic canyonlands vistas to the west, with mountain backdrop.
Surface
Creek bottom: stream-washed rocks and multiple fords.
Higher country: dirt and sand mixed with rocks and ledges.
Descent to southern ford: some slickrock.
Trail Details
Begins with gentle sandy travel and creek crossings, then hits an extended shelf hill with multiple lines. Continues through additional shelved hills, a loop featuring “The Wall” and a fun slickrock fin. Follows a long bumpy scenic stretch, crosses a cattleguard, then reaches a rocky descent (heavily maintained by volunteers but still demanding—extreme caution required). Beyond: more vistas and rocky shelves, ending with a slickrock descent to South Mill Creek ford. The return ascent grows harder as sand erodes and rock shelves protrude. Trail rating fluctuates due to ongoing erosion vs. repair efforts.
Length: 30 total, 15 off highway
Min Tire Size: 35+ inches
Winch: No, Front Locker: Yes, Rear Locker: Yes
