Barracks Maildrop - Kane CO UT

This map combines two popular routes. Barracks Trail and Shunesburg Maildrop (Sometimes referred to as Elephant Butte). Combined they are around 60 miles and your average speed will be 8mph if you keep moving. There is so much to see and do expect a very long day. The trail can easily be split into two where they nearly toucch at Harris point. The Mt Carmel trail head is located directly East of Highway 89 immediately south of the the Vergin river bridge 1/2mi South of Mt Carmel Junction UT. The entrance to our adventure is directly across Highway 89 from the trail head parking lot. The "Belly of the Dragon" is located about 1/2mi down the trail on the left, it goes under Highway 89. The Elephant Cove Trailhead is located approximately 3 miles south of the entrance to the Coral Pink Sand Dune State Park on Highway 43. This is the only trailhead in the area with a restroom facility. It is approximately 30 minutes from Kanab, UT and 25 minutes from Colorado City, AZ. The Sand Hill can present quite an obstacle as it is a loose sand. However, careful inspection reals that you do not need to climb straight up the hill. The trail zig zags across the hill and easy to climb. The terrain South of the Mail Drop is difficult and some rate it at extreme. Traveling North to South is downhill and easier. If time allows, Warriors Walk is worth the effort. Please do not disturb this ancient remnant. We completed this trail in a 50" Polaris RZR.
