Book Cliffs Sego Canyon - Emery CO UT

The Book Cliffs Sego Canyon trail near Green River Utah is 53 miles and took us 8 hours but we stopped a lot, there is so much on this trail. Amazing views from cliff tops, petroglyphs and a ghost town. We chose Crescent Junction to start and traveled clockwise. The town of Sego was founded by Henry Ballard, a local rancher, who discovered a vein of coal in the area in 1908. At its peak, the mine employed about 125 miners, and the town supported around 500 people. The town had a boarding house, company store, and several homes, as well as a schoolhouse and a church. The mine closed in 1947, and the town began to decline. The final blow came in the early 1950s when the railroad began to use diesel engines, reducing the need for coal. Today, the town is abandoned, but many of the original buildings remain, including the boarding house and company store. The extensive petroglyphs in Sego Canyon date back 2,000 years. The canyon contains rock art from several peoples; Fremont, Ute and Barrier-style. The route dead ends at the Ute reservation boundary. We rode the trail in a stock 4 seat Polaris Ranger without difficulty.
